The East Grinstead Concert Band were thrilled to return to the wonderful Eastbourne Bandstand – one of the oldest and probably the busiest in the country. The majestic beach-side setting is truly a wonderful place to perform – and although it was a lovely sunny day, the wind off the sea was bracing and our Band members had to use quite a few pegs to secure their music!
To highlight the talent within the Band, in the programme there were several solo items which included Leroy Anderson’s “Trumpeter’s Lullaby”, Rodgers & Hart’s “Blue Moon”, the “Largo” from Dvořák’s New World Symphony and a “Tribute to Artie Shaw”.
The Band performed a selection of music to acknowledge many anniversaries in 2015 – from the March “Wellington” (to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815), a selection from the musical “The Sound of Music” (it is 50 years since the film starring Dame Julie Andrews, DBE was released), a selection from the musical “Les Misérables” (the musical was first premiered at the Barbican in 1985), to John Williams’ haunting theme from the film “Schindler’s List” (to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp).
